The 15 Best Things to Do in Voss, Norway

Voss has earned itself a bit of a reputation globally as the ultimate extreme sports destination, but that’s definitely not where the intrigue surrounding the area begins and ends. So, for those planning an upcoming trip and who are still wondering what to do in Voss, Norway, here are a few things to add to your trip itinerary when visiting:

  1. Take in the View with the Voss Gondola

The Voss Gondola has the prestigious title of Northern Europe’s most modern and largest mountain gondola. There are 9 cabins in total, and each can hold up to 35 passengers. The ride to the top takes about 9 minutes and offers spectacular views of the mountains, Vangvatnet Lake, and the city center.

  1. Go on a Hike (Whether Summer or Winter)

Because of the breathtaking landscape and views, one of the most popular activities here in Voss is hiking. During the summer, hikes such as the Bordalsgjelet Gorge (an easy 4.8-kilometer hike), the Raugstadløypa (a moderate 3.4-kilometer hike), or Gjelle to Torfinnsheim via Grasidetoppen (a hard 17.4-kilometer hike) are definite favorites.

But Voss is the one place in Europe where the hiking fun doesn’t stop as summer comes to a close, and there are actually tours that will take you on a snowshoe hiking trip.

  1. White Water Rafting

White water rafting is, of course, another activity that can only be done via an official tour operator. While there are many adrenaline-pumping options, such as Voss Active’s Class 4 White Water Rafting Tour, there is also a family-friendly option, Norway’s Best Family Rafting Tours, suitable for children aged 5 and up.

  1. Kayak the Hardangerfjord

The Hardangerfjord is such a majestic place it is actually referred to as Norway’s “Queen of the Fjords.” So, experiencing the breathtaking beauty and the ultimate tranquillity while kayaking the Hardangerfjord is something indescribable to those who have not experienced it for themselves yet. You will find many different kayaking tours ranging from 3-hour outings to multiday kayaking tours

  1. Walk a Tight Rope When Visiting the Zipline Park

The Voss Zipline Park offers fun to young and old and not only tests your balance but also your bravery, with the tallest high rope being over 14 meters and the longest zipline being over 70 meters.

  1. Give Indoor Skydiving a Go

VossVind is an Indoor Skydiving venue in Voss that allows visitors to have the same skydiving experiences but from within the safety of a controlled wind tunnel. Here, you can feel how it feels to fly in the air without the fear of falling from the sky. Suitable for ages 5 to 100+.

  1. Go Ski at Voss Resort

Voss Ski Resort is one of the go-to ski destinations for both locals and visitors alike. It’s not far from the bigger cities of Bergen and Oslo, with various descents, cross-country trails, a ski school, and much more, it’s not surprising that the Voss Ski Resort is the place to go when you want to hit the slopes.

  1. Visit Voss Church

Voss Church is a picturesque little stone church that was built in 1271. Needless to say, it had to have quite a bit of restoration done throughout the years, but you’ll still find the original medieval stone altar there. The church is still active today, with services held every Sunday at 11:00.

  1. Check Out Tvindefossen Waterfall

Tvindefossen Waterfall is just 12 kilometers north of Vossevangen. The beautiful, multi-tiered waterfall is roughly 115 meters tall, and if you’re cruising the country in your motorhome, you’ll be happy to know that there is a camping site near the falls.

The Voss Folk Museum makes the perfect outing for those who wish to learn more about the region’s history. Here you’ll find plenty of information, artifacts, and exhibitions, including a farm cluster allowing you to see what life was like in Voss back then.

  1. Go Marvel at Bordalgjelet Gorge

We have already briefly touched on the popular hike to and through the gorge, but you don’t need to go on a hike to see this incredible natural wonder. The gorge is actually within walking distance from the town center. This gorgeous 5-kilometer gorge looks like something out of a fairy tale with its high cliff walls covered in moss and lush green vegetation and the river with crystal clear water running through it.

  1. Visit Smalahovetunet and Try the Local Delicacy (If You Dare)

Smalahovetunet is a family-owned restaurant famous for serving a local traditional favorite: smoked sheep’s head! Many locals will tell you that despite its daunting look, it’s quite delicious. So, are you adventurous enough to try?

  1. Travel Back in Time by Visiting Finnesloftet

Finnesloftet is another architectural gem found here in Voss. It is a wooden building built in 1295. Although originally built on the farmland of the Finne family, it served as a banquet hall for many celebrations and other festivities of the greater community. It’s literally just a 15-minute walk from the Voss train station, so it’s easy to work in a visit during your trip to Voss.

  1. Visit Bergslitræet in Prestegardsmoen (the Birthplace of Two Artist Brothers)

This picturesque little house of Bergslitræet is probably what most envision when talking about an idyllic white-picket fence home. But it’s not just the house’s beautiful aesthetic that makes it so important. This was the birthplace and childhood home of two of Norway’s most famous artistic siblings.

One, Knud Bergslien, was a painter, and the other, Brynjulf Bergslien, was a sculptor. Knud is most famous for his historical painting, Skiing Birchlegs Crossing the Mountain with the Royal Child. And Brynjulf is most famous for his bronze statue of King Karl Johan in front of the Royal Palace.
