This is a question we get a lot, and to us, the answer will always be “any time!” But in reality, certain times throughout the year that might be more suitable for you based on personal preferences, your budget, and what you would like to do and see here in Norway.
In this article, we give you the lowdown on the various scenarios and factors to consider when deciding when to travel to Norway. By using this article as a guide, you’ll be able to pick the perfect time for your trip to Norway to tick off everything on your Norwegian bucket list.
When is the Best Month to Visit Norway When it Comes to the Weather?
Luckily, there is no such thing as the best month to visit Norway when it comes to the weather - there are many. Most recommend visiting between May and August when the Norwegian weather is nice and mild, and one can look forward to temperatures ranging between 16 and 22 degrees Celsius.
When is the Best Time to Travel in Norway on a Tight Budget?
June to August is summertime in Norway and is considered our peak season. With peak season comes peak season prices, so if you’re a bit strapped for cash, you should probably try to avoid traveling to Norway during this time. Our “down” season is usually during winter since the colder weather tends to scare most tourists off.
This means you’ll be able to find much lower prices and all sorts of “down” season specials during this time. But, if you would like to have the best of both worlds (better weather, but also better prices), then we’d recommend you come visit during one of our shoulder months. These include May to June (our spring season) and September to October (our Autumn season).
When is the Best Time to Motorhome in Norway?
Exploring Norway in a motorhome is probably the best way to sidestep many travel challenges:
You can go “camping” even when the weather has already started to turn for traditional camping, which means more affordable travel will be available to you for longer throughout the year.
You have the convenience of having both transport and accommodation sorted and the flexibility of not necessarily having to book in and out at specific times and places (you can wing your trip itinerary a bit).
Generally, the best time to visit Norway via motorhome is between May and September. This is because road conditions can become tricky to navigate during the colder months with ice and snow, and we also have road closures, which can make road-tripping challenging.
When is the Best Time to to See the Northern Lights
The Northern Lights can only be seen under certain conditions. The weather needs to be cold and the air dry, and, needless to say, the sky needs to be clear, and it needs to be dark for you to see the bright neon lights dance across it. Based on these prerequisites, most would recommend that you visit between mid-September and early April, but with the understanding that the height of winter will be your best bet at seeing the Northern Lights in Norway.
When is the Best Time to Go Whale Watching
Whale watching in Norway is a much-loved activity, and boat tours allow visitors to get up close and personal with these gentle giants of the ocean. While you will find whales (and the whale-watching boat tours, of course) along the coast of Norway all throughout the year, our official whale season is between November and January. During this time, you’ll also be able to spot some of our impressive migratory whale species, such as Orcas and Humpback Whales.
When is the Best Time to Go Bird Watching
Many don’t know that Norway is a popular destination for birders. Birds such as the White-tailed Eagle and Atlantic Puffin are usually on most avid bird watchers’ birding bucket lists. For bird watching, most would recommend visiting Norway during the springtime, May to July in particular.
When is the Best Time to Hiking
Outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, etc., are activities one would reserve for those good weather days. In Norway, that means summertime (from June to August). Summer is also the season that boasts the most daylight hours, which means you can have a jam-packed itinerary.
But since the summer will be most outdoor aficionados’ go-to, many feel like the peak season crowds cramp their outdoor adventure style, and any small group activities will need to be booked well in advance to avoid disappointment.
That’s why some prefer visiting during the shoulder months of spring and autumn. That way, the weather is still fairly nice, and you still have plenty of daylight hours available, but you don’t have those peak season crowds to contend with.
When is the Best Time to Go Skiing
Hiking, canoeing, etc., are not the only outdoor adventures one can enjoy here. There is one much-loved sport and activity that can only be done during the winter here in Norway; skiing. While Norway may be at a slightly lower altitude than the rest of Europe, you can expect a fair amount of snow throughout the skiing season.
But, most will still recommend that you visit Norway for a skiing holiday from December to January when the low temperatures make for the best skiing adventures, especially the further north you go.
There will always be something exciting to do and see, irrespective of when you find yourself in Norway. But by following the abovementioned guidance, you’ll be able to decide what the best time to travel to Norway would be for you. Now, all that’s left to do is plan your trip, book your flight, rent a motorhome in Norway, and start the adventure of a lifetime!
